Ackley Brands wanted to launch a premium wine brand that would speak to Oregon’s big aspirations, humble culture, and deep connection to the natural world. I explored a range of visual directions around these themes, but the name they had chosen—Borealis—quickly focused the design on the timeless magic of the northern lights.

The natural world is a source of inspiration for all of us, but especially for winemakers. The northern lights capture that sense of magic that seems at once both perfectly natural and otherworldly. The deep, vibrant colors, bold-but-beautiful type, and signature patterns of the label evoke both the aurora borealis and the natural rhythms that govern the winemaking process.
